Sever's Disease and Podiatric Care

Sever's disease is a common cause of heel pain in children, named after JW Sever who first described the condition in 1912. It occurs when the growth plate in the heel becomes inflamed due to overuse of the bones and tendons in the foot, often from running, jumping, or other high impact sports. Children with Sever's disease may experience pain at the back or bottom of the heel, limping, stiffness, and difficulty participating in physical activities. The condition is typically seen in active children during growth spurts. A podiatrist can evaluate the severity, recommend stretching and strengthening exercises, provide supportive footwear or orthotics, and guide activity modification. If your child has heel pain or is limping, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and management tips for Sever’s disease.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Gerald Mauriello, DPM from Gerald Mauriello, DPM. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Easing Hammertoe Pain Through Professional Podiatric Care

Hammertoes occur when the small toes bend abnormally, creating pressure points that lead to irritation, inflammation, and difficulty wearing shoes comfortably. As the deformity progresses, corns and calluses often form over the raised joints, increasing discomfort and limiting mobility. A podiatrist can relieve pain by addressing both the symptoms and the underlying mechanics of the foot. Treatment may begin with trimming or reducing thickened skin, applying protective padding, or recommending custom orthotics to improve alignment and reduce pressure on the affected toes. In some cases, splinting or taping can help position the toe more comfortably and slow the progression of the deformity. If hammertoe pain becomes persistent or if the toe becomes rigid, minimally invasive or surgical correction may be the most effective option to restore function and relieve discomfort. If you are experiencing hammertoe pain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist to ensure targeted care that is designed to improve comfort and support long-term foot health.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Gerald Mauriello, DPM from Gerald Mauriello, DPM. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Diabetic Foot Infections and Podiatric Care

A diabetic foot infection is a serious condition that develops when bacteria enter the skin through a cut, blister, or ulcer on the foot of a person with diabetes. Reduced circulation and nerve damage can delay healing and allow infections to worsen quickly. Common causes include untreated wounds, poor foot hygiene, pressure points, and wearing improper footwear. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, warmth, pain, drainage, foul odor, or slow healing sores. Risk factors include poor blood sugar control, neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, and a history of foot ulcers. A podiatrist can help by diagnosing the infection early, providing wound care, prescribing appropriate treatment, and preventing complications through regular foot exams and education. If you have diabetes and notice any changes or wounds on your feet, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this serious condition.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Gerald Mauriello, DPM from Gerald Mauriello, DPM. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Understanding Flat Feet and Arch Types

Flat feet occur when the arches of the feet do not rise off the ground, causing the entire foot to make contact with the surface. You can often find out if you have flat feet by looking at your footprint after stepping on a wet surface or by checking whether your ankles roll inward when standing. Flat feet differ from normal arches, which provide natural support and shock absorption, and from high arches, which place extra pressure on the heel and ball of the foot. A podiatrist can evaluate your arch type, identify any related pain or alignment problems, and recommend treatments such as supportive footwear or custom orthotics. If you have problems related to flat feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can confirm this condition, and offer effective management tips.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Gerald Mauriello, DPM from Gerald Mauriello, DPM. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
